As Executive Director of\u00a0<\/span>CASA for Kids of South Central Texas<\/span><\/a>, I feel it is vital to continue to grow with\u00a0<\/span>our<\/span>\u00a0staff and volunteers<\/span>, so I planned Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>our<\/span>\u00a0staff, volunteers and community\u00a0<\/span>for Spring 2020. Then COVID-19 changed\u00a0everything\u00a0and the training was put on hold.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t the end of it.\u00a0<\/span>While in<\/span>–<\/span>person\u00a0<\/span>training\u00a0<\/span>was no longer an option, my MHFA Instructor<\/span>,<\/span> Jody Schulz<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>offered\u00a0<\/span>the training to CASA for Kids virtually.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>After several months of waiting for the best time to offer the course<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0given all the uncertainty with our new normal, we finally\u00a0<\/span>scheduled<\/span>\u00a0a Saturday session in October.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ability to stay connected virtually is both a blessing and a curse<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>I will be honest and tell you<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0I was Zoomed out.\u00a0<\/span>As the class approached,\u00a0<\/span>I considered asking Jody if I could join another class\u00a0at a later time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Thankfully, I continue<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0with the training as scheduled.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span>\u00a0I learned during the Youth MHFA training\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>not only relevant<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but vital<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0skills to cultivate. The\u00a0<\/span>MHFA Action Plan (<\/span>ALGEE<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>helps us notice and be fully present when we interact with others. I know that I am not to diagnose others<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but instead to observe changes in behavior.\u00a0<\/span>Very quickly, it became very\u00a0<\/span>clear that people with MHFA training serve as a vital link to early intervention.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same day I completed the Youth Mental Health First Aid training, I was able to put it into practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A friend reached out and did not sound like herself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I knew things had been tough with her family\u00a0<\/span>because of\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but I didn\u2019t realize how tough.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As we spoke, I began to use the tools I learned\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 including\u00a0<\/span>ALGEE. I listened nonjudgmentally to her heart and fears<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I gave reassurance that she was not\u00a0alone\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>told her I was thankful she was talking to me about how she felt.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In our training, I learned to ask if she had or was planning to harm herself. She\u00a0<\/span>said that she had been having those thoughts, but\u00a0<\/span>not at that\u00a0<\/span>particular\u00a0<\/span>moment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I asked her if she was thinking of killing herself<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and again, she said she had been having those thoughts but not at that very moment<\/span>. It\u00a0<\/span>felt odd to ask her if she had thought about how she would do it,\u00a0<\/span>but\u00a0<\/span>she\u00a0opened up<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and her breathing\u00a0actually became\u00a0lighter<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It was almost as if she had been holding her breath, waiting for someone to just ask. She\u00a0<\/span>said\u00a0<\/span>she had not gotten as far as to think of how or where<\/span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>just\u00a0<\/span>somewhere\u00a0<\/span>away from her kids\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0<\/span>all she knew. I thanked her for her vulnerability and rawness<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and then we talked about getting help.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked if she had a trusted counselor she could call.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I asked if she had reached out to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>MHMRA<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0in Harris County<\/span>\u00a0for help.\u202fI assured her I had a wonderful contact with MHMRA, and I would call her right back with the name and number of someone she could call that day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>She did reach out, and she got resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My friend was able to change her story that day, and every day after, she\u2019s made the choice to continue to change the outcome.\u00a0<\/span>Without\u00a0<\/span>my Youth MHFA\u00a0<\/span>training, this story could have had a very different\u00a0<\/span>ending<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am sincerely\u00a0<\/span>grateful\u00a0<\/span>for Jody Schulz and\u00a0<\/span>how she worked<\/span>\u00a0so hard to get CASA for Kids the training we so desperately needed,\u00a0<\/span>especially\u00a0<\/span>when the world was upside down.\u00a0<\/span>And\u00a0<\/span>I am\u00a0<\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>thankful to have\u00a0<\/span>taken\u00a0<\/span>Youth\u00a0<\/span>Mental Health First Aid this year<\/span>. I\u00a0<\/span>believe it is truly vital for all of us as the world continues to change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
