Commercials hawk the latest diet programs or supplements; magazines boast the best workout routines; and subway ads remind you to see your doctor for a physical. These messages usually ignore a very important aspect of our overall health \u2013 our mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalcouncil.org\/about-us\/vision-values\/mental-wellbeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Council for Mental Wellbeing<\/a> defines mental wellbeing as \u201cthriving regardless of a mental health or substance use challenge,\u201d representing \u201cresilience, strength and recovery.\u201d Mental wellbeing is about understanding and caring for your thoughts, feelings and actions. This can look different for each person.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) curriculum, when someone faces a mental health challenge, like depression or anxiety, it can affect all areas of their life. They may have difficulty working or in their personal relationships. It can lead to the use of alcohol and other substances. It can even disrupt the lives of those close to them, despite being treated.<\/p>\n<p>Mental health challenges can impact our physical health too. For example, anxiety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can cause<\/a> physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, insomnia and lack of concentration. Depression <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mentalhealth\/learn\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been shown<\/a> to increase the risk of long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take care of your mental wellbeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Often, the ways we care for our body can overlap with the ways we care for our mind. Use these tips from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi42oDA4dr3AhUroXIEHUGtAGAQFnoECAIQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.samhsa.gov%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fd7%2Fpriv%2Fsma16-4958.pdf&amp;usg=AOvVaw3zVt1a7wVHXzqP8trFivlQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration<\/a> (SAMHSA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/caring-for-your-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/a> to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Physical Health<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Mental Health<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">Eat a balanced diet with various fruits and vegetables.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Connect with loved ones and those in your community for emotional support. Try reaching out to family or friends instead of using substances when you are going through a tough time.<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">Take 15-20 minutes a day to relax by meditating, journaling or doing breathing exercises.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental health challenges are not uncommon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if you aren\u2019t facing a mental health challenge, it is likely that someone in your life is. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/release\/2020-national-survey-drug-use-and-health-nsduh-releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a national survey<\/a> administered by SAMHSA, about 18.9% of adults 18 years or older experience a mental health or substance use challenge each year. This translates to nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/mhstats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one in five adults<\/a> in the United States. It\u2019s important to understand what mental wellbeing is and how to take care of it so you can support your loved ones when they might need it most.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how to have open and honest conversations about these topics can help those close to you feel more comfortable talking with you about the challenges they face. If you\u2019re not sure where to begin, here are some conversation starters from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/app\/uploads\/2018\/05\/5-convo-starters-FNL.png\">MHFA<\/a> to break the ice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2022 \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/strong> Ask the question and mean it. Show you are listening by sitting alongside the person, facing your body towards them and maintaining comfortable eye contact. Keep in mind, however, that appropriate body language may vary based on the person\u2019s cultural background.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2022 \u201cI\u2019ve noticed that \u2026\u201d <\/strong>Start the conversation by explaining behavior changes you have noticed. For example, \u201cI\u2019ve noticed that you\u2019ve been showing up to work late a lot lately.\u201d Let them know you\u2019re concerned about these changes and want to help.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2022 \u201cDo you want to take a walk?\u201d<\/strong> Engaging a friend, family member or loved one you are concerned about in something active, like taking a walk together, can be a great way to start a conversation. The activity can take some of the nervousness and discomfort out of the conversation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2022 \u201cHow are you &#8212; really?\u201d<\/strong> Sometimes when someone says they\u2019re fine, they\u2019re not. Know the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/external\/2018\/09\/signs-of-suicide\/\">warning signs<\/a> to look for so you can know when to offer extra support.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2022 \u201cAre you thinking about suicide?\u201d<\/strong> If you are concerned that someone is considering suicide, ask the question directly! Asking a person if they have been thinking about suicide or have made plans will not increase the risk that they will complete suicide.
